We had an epic meet-up last Thursday. A great turn out and many new people, over 25 attendees! We talked about plans for 2010 and I wrote up the notes and we’re discussing them in our new LinkedIn group.

Come join us there and pass on the link to anyone who has been to Open Coffee Sligo or who might like to attend. http://tinyurl.com/sligolinkedin

Some great ideas which can be summed up by our group goals: to network, create opportunities for ourselves and others and improve our skills through exchange.

Kevin, Justin and myself (heather) are meeting on Wednesday to figure out what our game plan is for the next meet up and future ones.

We look forward to your input.

February Open Coffee Sligo

1 Feb 10 · 3 Comments

We’re kickstarting the Open Coffee meetups for 2010 this Thursday at 11am in the Clarion Hotel, Sligo.

In our last get together in early December – we expected to discuss our plans for 2010; Instead we speedily descended into a discussion around home technology – digital cameras, photographs, etc – which was pretty enjoyable and unforeseen.

This Thursday however – we want to get back on track with discussion, planning  and ideas around what people would like to see more of over the next few months.

So If you have views or thoughts on what things you would like to see being presented and discussed – then let us know this  Thursday in the Clarion.

Happy New year!

There’s no “official” Open Coffee Sligo meetup in January, next one is Thursday 4th February 2010.

We’re trying out using Ning to help people communicate about Open Coffee Sligo. There are a bunch of other Irish and international Open Coffee groups there. Please join up!

December Open Coffee

30 Nov 09 · 3 Comments

A little bit tardy with this note – but we’ve all been very busy with Northwest Connects over the last few days.

As usual though – first thursday of every month – generally in the Clarion Hotel – from 11am to 1pm – and this thursday 3rd December is no exception.

We will be delighted to see familiar faces, and we might see some new ones after the event last saturday.

There is no specific speaker or set agenda at present; however, we may talk about the direction of the group for next year in terms of types of speakers, topics for discussion and so on.

A live video link with Open Coffee Limerick had been planned – but we pushed this out until the New Year. Maybe we could extend this idea to having speakers from different locations via a video link up? OpenCoffee Derry and OpenCoffee Letterkenny have already expressed an interest in this. Maybe we could have a national Open Coffee Ireland video link up day.

Ok… Enough… Let’s enjoy some mince pies, good coffee and good conversation at 11am on thursday in the Clarion!

Northwest Connects: a conference for people starting up or restarting business

15 Nov 09 · 1 Comment

Northwest Connects logo

This logo was a collaboration between Open Coffee Sligo members Justin Knecht and Eddie Johnston

We’re getting really excited about the Northwest Connects event… in TWO WEEKS!

28 November 2009; 9.30-5pm at the Innovation Centre at IT Sligo

The event is free attend, but registration is required. Register: http://nwc09.eventbrite.com/

What is Northwest Connects?

A day long conference with talks, presentations, discussion and workshops to share expertise about starting up and running a business. Hopefully lots of business to business opportunities will arise from the event.

A collaborative effort

Schedule draft

The schedule has 20 minute speaker slots, two discussion panels, a networking activity and special 5x5 sessions to allow people to sign up to give a brief talk on the day, BarCamp style.

This event is being organised by Open Coffee Sligo members. Many people have made a contribution to planning and coordinating this event.

Denise Rushe & Aoife Porter are taking care of marketing and PR, getting this event into the papers, and getting the word out. Denise even started a NW Connects LinkedIn group & event listing, a facebook group: Northwest Connects, and Twitter @nwconnects! She’s been busy!

Eddie Johnston did the website, Justin Knecht designed the logo (Eddie added the cool dots map in the back). I’m (Heather James) working on the layout of print materials & volunteer wrangling. Kevin Peyton has organised the group panel discussion, and he’s going to chair it. Anne Louise O’Donovan, Aidan McKenna and Feargus Callagy are helping coordinate streams, and communicating with speakers. Anne Louise has also stepped in since last week to crack the coordination whip and keep us on our toes as we enter this home stretch.

Thanks to the sponsors

The reason we can offer this event for free is because of the sponsorship by WDC/Lookwest.ie, Sligo County Enterprise Board, AIB, Infacta and our hosts, The Innovation Centre at IT Sligo.

We’re really looking forward to the event. Please tell anyone you think who might be interested.

Wrap up from November meetup

6 Nov 09 · Leave a Comment

Thanks to Barry from Pure Sales for facilitating a very helpful session on “Increasing Your Sales” – I think everyone enjoyed it.

The emphasis of the discussion was around how to communicate what you do to potential customers – whether that be face to face, on the phone or via your website.

Many people find this “elevator pitch” for their business difficult to define – the thing is – it needs a lot of practice and iteration until the message is clear, easy to convey and is easily understandable to the potential customer.

Some of the things that we practised and discussed included

- Describe what you do in 100 words
- Describe 3 reasons why a customer would choose your product or service above your competitors
- What 3 questions do customers ask you all the time.

All of these questions (which the attendees had to complete themselves) provoked a lot of discussion. Some gave examples receiving good email newsletters  (sharing information useful to your customers is good)  and the downsides of receiving cold call enquiries (the first question of ‘how much does x cost?’ is usually bad..).

We also had some new faces including Odilon Hunt of AVA Systems, Chris Blake of FiSCA, Enda McCloskey of 21C Training and Mark Capilitan of Mark Capilitan Photography – Thanks for coming along guys!

November Open Coffee Speaker: “Increasing Your Sales”

22 Oct 09 · 2 Comments

After the great tips and practical information on taxation and other finance matters presented by Anne Louise O’Donovan at the October meetup – we’re glad to have another practical session from Barry Murphy of Pure Sales.

Join us on Thurday 5th November, 11am-1pm  in the Clarion Hotel.

Barry will speak about “Increasing Your Sales”, and he plans to keep it simple – it’s all about being visible in the market. What are you doing to ensure your market sees you ? How clear are you about what your target market wants ? How are you communicating with your market ?

About Barry : He has been an independent sales, marketing and business development mentor and trainer to small and micro West of Ireland businesses since 2003. Prior to ‘going it alone’, Barry was the General Manager of a French exporting agrifood business for 4 years and the Sales and Marketing Manager of an Irish indigenous manufacturing exporter for 8. He began his career with 2 years in the Marketing Dept of the then Bord Fáilte in its Dublin headquarters. He graduated with a BA in International Marketing and Languages from DCU and speaks fluent French and intermediate German.

What is OpenCoffee all about?

5 Oct 09 · 2 Comments

Recently, Claire Burge of Simplify Learning asked me “What the open coffee events are about and why they have been beneficial to you?” I thought instead of just emailing her, I’d write a post here and share with others…

I recently spoke at the Ignite Dublin talks at the Science Gallery. I spoke about our OpenCoffee group, and the plans for Northwest Connects – so this is all fresh in my mind.

By the way, this is Heather- since this cheapo WordPress template doesn’t show authors.

The Origins of the Open Coffee network

Saul Klein’s early descriptions of the Open Coffee network focus on connecting web developers & web-based entrepreneurs with investors.

“The OpenCoffee Club was started to encourage entrepreneurs, developers and investors to organise real-world informal meetups to chat, network and grow. Read the blog post that started the ball rolling.”

And this is primarily what they have been doing: growing. The OpenCoffee official group lists 80 groups, but this is likely not all of them. Not all of the over 20 groups in Ireland are listed there. Of the groups in Ireland, some meet weekly; some once a month, and some took off the entire summer.

“The key is a regular place and a regular time – it’s not important who comes along, some days it might be no one – just that people know if they want to meet, this is the time and this is the place. We want to create some density for people — a few places where people know they can meet or bump into others.” – from the original post by Saul Klein

In the original context: London, you have a population density which can handle frequency; and can specialize in the area of web developers & investors. Ours is a little different…

Our Open Coffee in Sligo

Our Open Coffee meets the first Thursday of every month, 11-1pm. It’s free and open to all. Depending on the location, you just have to buy yourself a coffee (or tea!)

We also have a different mix of people. While all brewing some ideas for services and businesses; and we’re swapping referrals and leads- but we’re not at the stage where we can go run to an investor or join the Chamber of Commerce, or BNI for established businesses.

And we’re not all techies. I think this makes it a more interesting group, and more useful since we’re not all living in the same bubble.

Our OpenCoffee is also like a “community of practice” – a type of learning group. Last week, Anne Louise O’Donovan presented some tax tips for small businesses and freelancers. We’re sharing our expertise, while also learning about each other – and this helps each of us expand our reach. As a freelancer or working in your own company- you don’t have the same context for learning- to look over the shoulder of, and learn from your colleagues. I think OpenCoffee can offer this kind of context.

Networking through knowing

Like with anything worth while, the tired adage applies: “You get out what you put in.” A representative from a County Enterprise board (not Sligo) said he went to an Open Coffee (not ours) and he “was underwhelmed.” I was annoyed when he said this, what did he mean? Did one-off visitors to our OpenCoffee not return because they were underwhelmed? Well, I wanted to say to him, (but didn’t) Open Coffee isn’t there to entertain, and I doubt you’d get much out of it if you only attended once.

With that said, I know someone who has attended the Open Coffee Sligo only two times, but in those two times he made contacts- and got back in touch with them, which lead to two more clients for him, and three hot leads which he has lined up for when his service gets out of beta-testing. That’s great news for him, and a sign that without a chance to meet and rub elbows with people outside your bubble, you may be missing opportunities.

Networking is built on developing relationships- meeting once off, you aren’t likely going to get valuable reputation-based referrals. People need to *know* you, and know what you do. I am learning more and more about the others who attend our group, and more and more I’m knowledgeable about what they do, what they offer, and what kind of help/leads they are looking for.  And- over time, I care more, and I’m motivated to help them.

We’re hoping to grow the network more and more. Email me at hjames {at} gmail.com if you have questions.

October Open Coffee Speaker: The October tax deadline – tips to remove the annual dread!

14 Sep 09 · 2 Comments

Join us, Thursday 1 October, 11-1pm at the Centre for Design Innovation (note change of venue!)

Tips for freelancers, self employed and small business owners on managing their finances and demystifying the area of tax and accounting.

Presented by Open Coffee Sligo member, Anne Louise O’Donovan.

About Anne Louise: Since qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1999, Anne Louise has had a varied career.  She moved from working in KPMG, a large accounting firm in Dublin, to setting up her own business as a reflexology, aromatherapy and massage practitioner.  Having met a lot of like-minded people during this time who were running their own businesses, she then decided to return to work in a smaller accounting firm advising small business owner-managers, start ups and self employed individuals.  Her clients ranged from actors, comedians and musicians to builders, butchers and yoga teachers.  She moved to west to Sligo in 2007 and has recently completed her professional tax exams.  She now divides her time between Dublin and Sligo and is currently working on setting up her own business where she hopes to offer one-to-one mentoring sessions and group workshops for creatives, freelancers, small business owners and self employed individuals providing practical advice on managing their finances and demystifying the area of tax and accounting.

This is going to be a very practical hands-on presentation. We’ll do part of a normal meet & greet Open Coffee. Then Anne Louise will give a practical presentation.

Open Coffee Sligo September

4 Sep 09 · Leave a Comment

We had a good couple of hours in the Clarion on Thursday, 3rd September.

New faces included Hilary Mc Partland from Sligo Chamber of Commerce, Ciara Walsh – a M.Sc student if Sligo IT and Davide Gallazzi of North West Environmental.

We kicked off with the discussions around forming a book club – with a lot of thoughts from people on the practicalities and time associated – shame on us all for not making more time to read.

In the end, we decided that for the next event – people should bring a couple of their favourites (business, design, entrepeneurship, etc related) and pitch as to why they think the group would find their choices interesting – we will then choose a book and hopefully many will take the time out to read and discuss for the next meeting.

We did put Hilary from the Sligo Chamber on the spot a little by asking her to tell us more about the Chamber, their internal working groups and membership benefits. Even though she has only been with the organisation just over a month, Hilary was able to give a great heads-up on their current activities and aims – and Feargus was able to chip in with his own experiences over the past few years.

We also talked a little about North West Connects but were conscious that a planning meeting is coming up on tuesday next; An interesting aside was that Sligo Chamber also seem to see the benefit of making contact with North West natives – now resident in Dublin – for a meetup that is taking place there later this month; North West Connects are also doing the same with the possiblity of inviting some speakers home for the weekend of the conference.

There was a lively discussion around realising ideas for online products and services using sweat equity – Justin is a good guy to speak with if you are interested in developing and chatting about this concept.

Last AND very much least – the straw poll of the 8 people remaining at 1pm to the question “NAMA – Yes or No” -  7 No’s to 1 Yes

Thanks to all for attending and sharing your views and opinions -next meetup will be Thursday, 1st October.
